As in every sport, there are special terms in ice hockey that are used in reporting. In order to prepare your NHL bets and to evaluate statistics, it is therefore essential to familiarise yourself with them.
Face-Off (Bully): After a break in the game, one of the nine bullypoints on the ice will kick off the game (Bully).
Offside: If an attacking player crosses the blue line between the neutral zone and the attacking zone before the puck is there, the offside is decided.
Goal area offside: If an attacking player enters the goal area before the puck is there, the decision is made on goal area offside.
Penalty shot: The player taking the shot runs from the centre line towards the goalkeeper and tries to score a goal. If the puck rebounds, no re-shot is allowed.
Powerplay: Fast passing and tactically clever position game with the aim to settle in the opponent's defensive zone. Particularly useful for overpaying games.
Boxplay: Describes the opposite of Powerplay and is also called "Penaltykilling". The outnumbered team tries to prevent the opponent from scoring a goal.
Empty Net Goal: Goal scored when the opponent's goal is empty (because the goalkeeper was exchanged for a field player).
Shorthander: Goal scored outnumbered.
Icing: If the puck crosses, directly or indirectly, the red middle line and the opponent's goal line, this is considered an illegal long-range shot.
One-timer: Direct goal shot after a pass without first checking the puck.
Time-Out: Available to each team once per match (duration: 30 seconds).
